I just got out of my daughter’s IEP meeting and I’m irate. They’re not going to allow her into the gifted program because she missed the criteria by, essentially, one point. She needed to get a broad spectrum IQ of 118, she scored a 117. I am so frustrated.
She’s in first grade, and they tell me that next year she may do better, but what am I supposed to do this year when she’s crying so hard she throws up because she doesn’t want to go to school?
They’re recommending I try to get her into the magnet school, once again. I tried in Kindergarten, but she missed out because they choose by lottery. I just don’t know. I’m trying to give public school a chance, but I think I’m going to have to pull her out and homeschool her. I’m terrified to do that, though, because I’m afraid I’m not patient enough to teach her anything. Argh.
Advice, anyone?

Coming from a homeschool mom of six (three of whom are school age), give yourself more credit…. If you think your daughter would be better off at home, by all means teach her at home. It's really not as hard as it looks! YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

You know if you're really really stressed about not being patient enough, find a curriculum you like. Otherwise just wing it and teach her whatever she wants to learn. You really can do it. Just like Christine said! I'm so sorry the school is doing that….I'd be pulling my hair out too.

1. Keep trying to get into the magnet school.
2. In the meantime, get a teacher to go to bat for you. My child missed by one question in math—I appealed and lost. The following year her classroom teacher got her in easily with no further testing.

I was worried about homeschooling as well (where to start?!), but we started last July and couldn't be happier. Curriculum ranges from everything you need in one box with instructions on what to do every day to flying by the seat of your pants, do what your interested in. Homeschooling is great, and the best thing is you can easily tailor it to what you and your dc need.
