    What Do You Expect?

Pics_019Mommies, I’m interested in your opinions. What do you expect from your kids as far as household chores?

After a whole lot of drama in my household, we finally decided to let the kids decide what chores they wanted to do. Flip, my super-responsible 13 year old decided he wanted to keep the kitchen clean and do his own laundry. (He doesn’t like the way my husband does laundry, which I find hilarious.)

The six year old HelloKitty has decided she wants to be in charge of keeping the living room clean and cleaning out the cat boxes. She keeps up with it pretty well and actually fights with Flip over who gets to wet-Swiffer the living room floor. Flip contends it’s all one floor and therefore his responsibility, HK says it’s part of the living room and therefore her domain. Me, I don’t care as long as it gets done.

The harder part is deciding what the three year old SpiderMan does. HK and Flip think it’s patently unfair that he doesn’t have a room he’s in charge of, but the only rooms other than bedrooms left to clean are the bathrooms. Bathroom chemicals + a 3 year old = disaster, so we have SM doing all the fetch-and-tote type things. Like getting a can of soda from the fridge for anyone who wants one or letting the dog in and out of my bedroom 3,000 times a day.

Do I sound like a slave driver or does this sound fair? What are your kids doing as far as chores?

We don't do much yet, mainly because we really haven't had to. My older two are each responsible for their own stuff and cleaning their room and they do help out with dishes and laundry because they're still young enough that those things are fun! The little one 'helps' in her own way too. :)

It's pretty informal around here, but Pea (2) feeds the dogs, helps walk the dogs, puts her clothes in the hamper, helps put away her own laundry, and puts her toys away.
