School is in full force now and I have to say I was ready this year. All four of my children are there and the break is nice. This is new for me because for the last fourteen years I have been home raising them. I still like to know what is going on when they are not with me and have found that the new computer system in place helps me. It is called Ren Web and it shows attendance, grades, lunches menu, newsletters and school information. I find this so helpful. I have found some moms that are concerned that it is more information than they need. Over at Weary Parent, I found a post called Grades Online- Is It A Good Idea? and they are questioning just that……
"My niece’s school district has a system in place where teachers,
parents, and students have access to just about everything online -
including grades. Now I know that technology makes this possible, but is it really
good to give parents the tools to micromanage their children’s lives
anymore than we already do?"
I can’t speak for everyone on this subject, but I have to say that my children need some guidance here and there. We live in time when education is so important and when you are just a child you do not realize the importance. I only have a short time to help steer my kids in the right direction and I am going to do my best. Let me know what you think!

As a former elementary teacher (sure, one day I'll go back… right…), I think it is an AWESOME idea to put info online. It makes the parents and kids more accountable. I can't tell you how many times parents would be oblivious to how their child was doing in school. Now, they have NO excuse. And yes, it IS the parent's responsibility to make sure they know what is going on their their child's life. It IS a time to micromanage.

With the records that employers now keep about their employee's email and internet use etc, I think that getting kids used to this surveillance can't be a bad thing. And it saves us from all the forgotten homework assignments, etc.

Thanks for continuing the discussion! Part of me would really like the ability to monitor my kids grades online, but there is part of me that still wonders if it is the best thing. I truly understand and can empathize with the pros and the cons.
