Marketing Toward Women: Works For My Daughter

Blog_shots_058My daughter loves anything that is marketed toward women. Her latest thing is the Luna packets you can add to water, to flavor it. She says, "This is for women only, sorry, brothers, you can’t have any." It’s really cute.

So, she was drinking the Luna Elixir earlier when she said to me, "I hope this is not the sort of water that will stop your period." I laughed and told her it wouldn’t. "Good," she said, "because I would hate for my period to stop before I even get it!"

She’s six and worried about when she’ll get her period. I remember the days of worrying about getting my period, it was my big Are you there, God? It’s me, Margaret phase. I was 11, and got my period before many of my friends did. 20 years later, I’ve got dealing with my period under control, but I remember the total anguish it used to cause.

I wonder what it’ll be like for her. I wonder if the marketing Always and Kotex are doing toward teens will help any. I’m thinking it won’t, I think girls have been anguished about their periods from the beginning of time.

A recent trip to my pediatricians office gave way to new information regarding puberty and girls. She said that girls are starting puberty at about 9 years of age and starting their periods at about age 11. Okay, so 30 years ago the average age to start periods was about 13. Is it due to the hormones in our food? Well, the jury seems to be out on that matter but my pediatrician seemed to think that childhood obesity had huge role in when a young girl starts menstruating. The more body fat the sooner they start. Interesting.
