Busy Mom has a post I can absolutely relate to. I signed my daughter up for soccer a couple of years ago. A couple of weeks before the season was supposed to start, I got a phone call:
Soccer Dude: Hey, we were glad to see you signed your daughter up for soccer, but because we have had so many children sign up this season, we’re really short on coaches. Can we count on you to volunteer to coach?
Me: Sorry, man, I know nothing about soccer.
Soccer Dude: Oh, no worries, you’ll be fine! We all had to start somewhere.
Me: No, I don’t think you understand the extent of my lack of knowledge of soccer.
Soccer Dude: Well, if we don’t have enough coaches, some children are not going to get to play. Like yours.
Me: Fine, I’ll do it.
So, I did it, but you guys, I had the worst soccer team EVER. We had one girl who scored lots of goals and the rest of my girls kind of halfheartedly chased the other team around with the ball. Prior to the season, I went online and looked up every single thing I could find about coaching soccer, but nothing prepared me for this. Somehow, the girls just didn’t "get" what I was trying to teach them.
Fortunately, this is the kind of soccer league where they don’t keep score, but the parents kept score. By the end of the season I had three girls left, including my daughter- who wanted to quit the team, too.
When they called the next season asking if I wanted to coach, I just laughed and told them we had moved on to something else. Like NOT COACHING SOCCER.
