    Spring Hay Fever

With Spring just around the corner, you or your child may already be experiencing some early allergy symptoms.  What are normally harmless substances (like pollen) that we are exposed to, can often cause the immune system to react as though it were harmful, causing multiple symptoms. When children are affected by these allergens they often times show symptoms of runny nose, watery eyes, and itchy ears, nose and throat. Whereas these allergy symptoms will usually occur with no sign of fever, kids often miss school and other activities due to just feeling miserable.

Studies show that 20% of all Americans suffer allergies and the key to relief is to control what triggers them.  By talking with your doctor about your child’s symptoms he/she can prescribe the appropriate medications that can alleviate some symptoms but there are also many things that you can do at home to further reduce your child’s symptoms and make the season more comfortable.

    1. Keep windows closed and use the air conditioning, not fans.
    2. Replace carpet with a hard surface such as tile or hardwood.
    3. Cover mattresses, box springs and pillows with plastic cases or allergy proof covers.
    4. Avoid upholstered furniture which hold dust and animal dander. Leather is a good option as it is easy to clean.
    5. Dust blinds often or replace them with washable curtains.
    6. Keep house dry with a dehumidifier in the hot humid months.
    7. Wash rugs and carpets often.
    8. Use mold killing cleaners in the bathroom.
    9. Decrease the number of indoor plants.
    10. Fix leaks to prevent moisture that can cause mold.
    11. Check pollen counts in your area an stay inside when they are high. If you have to go outside, a good rule of thumb is to take a cleansing shower right when you come in.

Children are very resilient but when allergies strike it can take a toll on the family so talk to your doctor and take measures to make sure your shak is allergen free.
