    “Go To Your Room!”

"Go to your room!" Ahhh, the proverbial statement from parents regarding unjust behavior. But does this statement hold any real meaning? Is there any real effect by sending a child to his/her room nowadays?

With kids rooms now sporting televisions, video games, and Internet access, this form of discipline does seem a bit obsolete. Bedrooms for children have grown into full blown media rooms, play rooms, and work rooms in addition to modern sleeping areas.  The term "go to your room" used to invoke a sense of fear from the child of not wanting to be left alone to think about his/her actions. Now children want to go to their rooms to relax, enjoy, and escape from mom and dad.

So, how can parents create a kids room that includes color, functionality, and still be cool at the same time? Start by focusing on the kids.  The bloggers at DesignTalk have some terrific ideas for kids rooms from baby to teen and even if your child is not quite old enough to have an opinion about decor, it’s only a matter of time before individual preferences kick in. We suggest creating a room that not only pleases your child but meets your needs as a parent as well.  Here’s how….

    1. Age: Choose furniture and accessories that are age appropriate and adaptable to their changing needs.
    2. Personality: Ask your child their opinion about their interests and what they would like as far as decorating themes go.
    3. Activities: Take inventory of your child’s basic activities and make a room that can host these activities comfortably.
    4. Scale: Give your child a sense of control over their domain by giving them the ability to hang up clothes, reach toys and books and relax comfortably.
    5. Color: This is the fun part because kids love visual stimulation and bright colors. Consider your child’s taste and throw in some of their favorite colors.
    6. Maintenance: This is probably the most important for mom so choose items that are easy to clean and durable for a child.
    7. Safety: A safe bedroom is critical. Read up on the products you’ve purchased and keep a look-out for recalled items. Keep the literature for items you’ve purchased for future disassembly and storage.
